To promote phase two of the detoxification pathway I often recommend for my clients to introduce epsom salts into their baths.   Epsom salt baths have been used for decades to help relieve sore muscles, boost magnesium levels, promote relaxation, draw out infections, tame stings and bites as well as for household duties.  Epsom salts contain magnesium sulfate.

Interestingly, I recently came across a study titled “Role of magnesium sulfate in seizure prevention in patients with eclampsia and pre-eclampsia”.  In this article the researchers report that seizure prevention is critical with pre-eclampsia which can lead to death in patients. Their findings conclude that magnesium sulfate is the most effective means to address seizure prevention.    Please read further.

“Magnesium sulfate is a significantly better drug than either diazepam or phenytoin for preventing recurrent seizures in eclamptic patients. Magnesium sulfate has diverse cardiovascular and neurological effects and also alters calcium metabolism.  Although the drug crosses the placenta and may affect the fetus, these effects are clinically small and fetal morbidity has been shown to be reduced in randomised studies comparing magnesium sulfate to either phenytoin or benzodiazepines.”

The dosage of magnesium sulfate given is typically quite high in these cases and such high doses can lead to toxicity.  I recommend that high doses of magnesium sulfate should only be prescribed/recommended and monitored heavily by a medical professional.  Still, the findings conclude:

“Magnesium sulfate is now the drug choice for treating eclamptic patients”.

The two key findings of this research are:

  1. Magnesium sulfate is effective at stopping/reducing seizures
  2. Magnesium sulfate is considered a safer alternative to phenytoin or benzodiazepines.

Typically I’ll recommend an optimal dosage of 2 cups of epsom salt as magnesium sulfate in a body bath to boost magnesium levels, promote relaxation and to amp up phase two detoxification, which may be impaired.   In many situations,  my clients begin with extremely low doses of 1 tablespoon and slowly increase to a comfortable levels.  Foot baths and magnesium creams can be used alternatively (at different dosages).

Much light,

Lynn
