In my last post I briefly discussed cerebral folate deficiency.   The latest research supports that an autoimmunity may explain the decreased folate transport to the central nervous system.  Still when cerebral folate deficiency is identified a monitored dosing of 5MTHF may help improve the transport of folate into the central nervous system.

In Functional Diagnostic Nutrition, autoimmunity is viewed as a result from a runaway immune system that led to systemic inflammation and ultimately the body attacking itself.   The approach is not to just look for the magic bullet but for a comprehensive approach in all systems often asking the question “Why?”

Foods can often be viewed as “cross reactive” or “molecularly similar” to tissues in the body.  As a result the heightened response to attack tissues can be a result of an immune system confusing foods for the tissue.  As a result the antibodies have “set up camp” and are on heightened alert.  For this reason, it’s essential that everything is done to quiet the autoimmune response.  Dairy has been identified as a food that can contribute to a heightened immune response.  You’ll find the research in the study entitled “A milk-free diet downregulates folate receptor autoimmunity in cerebral folate deficiency syndrome”

Be well,
