An excellent study on the comparison between pyrodoxine (PN) and the more absorbable pyridoxal phosphate (PLP). The latter resolved seizures as an injectable form and had a higher success rate than pyrodoxine in the oral form. Of the 94 patients, 57 patients had generalized idiopathic retractable seizures and 37 focal seizures. ELEVEN of these patients (age range 8mo to 15 years) experienced a “dramatic” cessation of seizures. Some had to remain on AED’s,other’s remained AED-free (my note: this study was not intended to explore optimal dosage and may/may not have had an affect on those that remained on AED’s). There was a 46% improvement with infantile spasms and the eldest to respond to PN or PLP was 15 years old. PLP is effective in controlling 11.7% with idiopathic intractable epilepsy” and should be considered in all cases.
