Improving constipation is a task that I’m confronted with every day in practice. Clients will explain that their child or themselves is struggling with constipation. Even though I have plenty of “tools” to help improve constipation, many of them need to be ingested which can be challenging for our very small children or those that are sensitive to ingesting supplements.
Grandma knew best? The old days of castor oil is still a frightening revisit in my family. The taste is and was horrific! But… it certainly did help with elimination. Fortunately, castor oil can also be used topically, which saves the palate and improves the outcome; stimulating elimination. As a reminder, elimination is an important and necessary form of detoxification.
Castor oil when placed on the abdomen (or even to the right) can help stimulate liver function, and when placed lower can help with menstrual cramps (for our teen and adult women).
I’ve had several clients that have done well with using this method. But as with all recommended changes, I encourage you to use caution. Our children and adults who experience seizures may indeed have digestive dysbiosis, constipation, diarrhea, impacted bowels, etc. They are also very sensitive to new changes. You are the expert on yourself or your child. Doing a spot test with a little castor oil on the skin, may also be necessary to ensure there’s no allergic response.
I’ve attached a document of a simple means to apply castor oil with heat on the stomach of children. The recommendations include using for lengthy bouts of time, 20 minutes to 1 hour. I recommend as with all changes GO LOW, GO SLOW. Begin with a couple of minutes on day 1, monitor how well tolerated and slowly increase time.
Amazon also offers a less messy “kit” option. That can be found here
