We’ve discussed the imbalances between the sympathetic nervous system (fight/flight) and the parasympathetic nervous system (rest/digest) and how the latter is often dominant in individuals that are experiencing seizures and seizure disorders. My focus is to test (not guess) to explore what internal stressors are hyper-stimulating the sympathetic nervous system. The goal is to remove those stressors so the nervous system can become more restored in balance. The other goal is to support and strengthen the parasympathetic nervous system.
This is an excellent study that reveals that something as simple as classical music can help boost the parasympathetic nervous system. The journal is entitled “Parasympathetic activation is involved in reducing epileptiform discharges when listening to Mozart music”. In it, the researchers assessed 64 children diagnosed with seizure disorders by assessing brainwaves during and after receiving the sounds of classical music, specifically the artist Mozart. The results revealed that epileptic discharges were reduced in most of the children and the parasympathetic response increased.
Like meditation, classical music can induce a parasympathetic response and potentially reduce seizures in children. A simple yet effective practice that can be implemented in the comfort of your home.
Be well,
Lynn
