This is extremely recent research titled “Correction of vitamin D deficiency improves seizure control in epilepsy: A pilot study“.  In this study 13 individuals who had demonstrated a long history of seizures of varying forms and were resistant to AED’s, showed deficiency of Vitamin D and improvements when supplemented.

The population, although small, experienced a multitude of seizure types.  They were tested using 25(OH)D measurements.  For those that tested within range (30 or above) they were offered a maintenance dose (2000 to 2600IUs).  Those that were classified deficient received high supplementation (40,000 – 200,000 IU’s orally).   Deficiency was identified in 12 of the 13 patients.

Following 90 days, levels were restored to a healthy range and 12 of the 13 showed remarkable improvements with an average of 40% reduction in seizures!  These results are exciting, despite its limitations.

I encourage all of my clients to get their vitamin D levels tested.  We know that AED’s can deplete Vitamin D levels and that Vitamin D receptors are found in the brain, help regulate immunity and utilization of minerals including calcium and magnesium.

My concern with this study is for the client that was ‘within range’ at 30  for his/her initial 25(OH)D  levels, was only given a maintenance dose.  What may have been the result for that individual with supplementation?

Per the literature, over 50 is an optimal level especially when neurological symptoms are present.

Bringing much light,

Lynn
